REVIEWS OF THE RAVEN HOTEL
The visit by Coubertin to Much Wenlock in the autumn of 1890 was marred by a steady downpour, but the baron was in good speaking form. He said that when he first came to Britain, nine years before, he “hated the English” – but this was because England was the only European nation not subdued by Napoleon I!” The announcement that he had “since changed his opinion” was greeted with applause by the 60 souls gathered in The Raven Hotel.
